Khaled Hosseini's kick-ass book became a so-so movie, but now it has another shot at visual transcendence.
In my opinion, the cinematic rendition suffered from a colossal error of omission: the author's unique, emotionally loaded voice.
The heart of the novel was the narrator's inner struggle -- his painful coming to terms with his past sin, and finding the courage to make amends.
The psychological journey he goes through carries the reader from page to page and charges the events of the book with a personal resonance.
The movie excised the storyteller's voice, and the literal result didn't give any reason to sympathize with the main character.
