Mercury News contracts to core readership; will you notice?

If you're like me and, I bet, most other blog readers, you get your news for free online, so the death of newspapers is a largely abstract concept in your everyday life.

For what it's worth, the San Jose Mercury News, once one of the proudest daily papers in the land, will no longer deliver on weekdays to readers in San Francisco or other "outlying areas." Ultimately that means less funding for reporters and fewer news stories produced in any depth.

I suppose one could ask, if a forest once fell to provide the daily distribution medium for newspaper publishing, and all the unemployed journalists end up living as homeless wildmen in the treeless barrens, will anyone reading blogs on their PDAs notice?
